Male Like Me

January 23rd, 2006

Acidman comments on Norah Vincent’s new book, “Self-Made Man, citing the following excerpt:

“If you did your job or held up your end, and treated them with the passing respect they accorded you, you were all right.” Neither dumb lugs nor proletarian saints, Ned’s bowling buddies are wont to make homophobic cracks and pay an occasional visit to a strip club, but they surprise Vincent with their lack of rage and racism, their unflagging efforts to improve Ned’s atrocious bowling technique and “the absolute reverence with which they spoke about their wives,” one of whom is wasting away from cancer.

Acidman adds:

Why should anyone be “surprised” by a “lack of rage and racism” in a group of men? Why should anyone find that men expressing “absolute reverence” for their wives a remarkable idea? It certainly couldn’t be because these qualities are totally opposite the leftist, feminist, intellectual, New York Times stereotype of men today.

More “Divine” Idiocy

January 16th, 2006

Pat Robertson must be on vacation this week. Guess who’s wrongly invoking the name of God this time?

“Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it’s destroyed and put stress on this country,” [New Orleans Mayor Ray] Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.

“Surely he doesn’t approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We’re not taking care of ourselves.”

Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a “chocolate” city again. Many of the city’s black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina.

“It’s time for us to come together. It’s time for us to rebuild New Orleans - the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans,” the mayor said. “This city will be a majority African American city. It’s the way God wants it to be. You can’t have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn’t be New Orleans.”

Could you imagine the outrage if a white politician had made a similar statement? Expect the left to remain quiet on this one.

What Nagin really wants is to retain political power. Without a black majority, he’ll get voted out of office (and soon, God willing).

New Orleans residents need to purge the corrupt political system that has contributed to the post-hurricane problems there. I wouldn’t say that the city is “chocolate”, but a darker shade of brown from the BS that flows from city hall.

Update: Nagin offers an apology of sorts. Apparently, he meant to say that the Big Easy would be a “Nesquik” city when all’s said and done… (via Michelle Malkin)

An Appeal from Center-Right Bloggers

January 13th, 2006

The following is a joint statement from a group of bloggers regarding the upcoming House leadership election:

===

We are bloggers with boatloads of opinions, and none of us come close to agreeing with any other one of us all of the time. But we do agree on this: The new leadership in the House of Representatives needs to be thoroughly and transparently free of the taint of the Jack Abramoff scandals, and beyond that, of undue influence of K Street.

We are not naive about lobbying, and we know it can and has in fact advanced crucial issues and has often served to inform rather than simply influence Members.

But we are certain that the public is disgusted with excess and with privilege. We hope the Hastert-Dreier effort leads to sweeping reforms including the end of subsidized travel and other obvious influence operations. Just as importantly, we call for major changes to increase openness, transparency and accountability in Congressional operations and in the appropriations process.

As for the Republican leadership elections, we hope to see more candidates who will support these goals, and we therefore welcome the entry of Congressman John Shadegg to the race for Majority Leader. We hope every Congressman who is committed to ethical and transparent conduct supports a reform agenda and a reform candidate. And we hope all would-be members of the leadership make themselves available to new media to answer questions now and on a regular basis in the future.

Belated Blog Anniversary

September 23rd, 2005

Being that I’m horrible when it comes to remembering anniversaries, I noticed that this weblog is four years old as of the 16th…

No entries today, due to a major power outage in my neighborhood. More tomorrow (or when power is restored, whichever comes first).

Katrina: Another Levee Breach

September 12th, 2005

CNN is reporting that another levee has failed in New Orleans. There is a leak in the London Avenue canal, which routes water flow into Lake Ponchartrain.

Katrina: Hurricane Relief Blog Day

August 31st, 2005

Tomorrow, bloggers worldwide will be participating in Hurricane Katrina: Blog for Relief Day, in an effort to raise awareness and funds to aid those who were affected by the hurricane. TTLB and Instapundit are co-sponsors.

I will be participating to the best of my ability, and recommend that donations be made directly to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Relief Fund. The ARC will be providing the bulk of support to assist displaced Louisianans, Mississippians, and Alabamans in need by providing shelter, food, water, medical assistance, and other necessary services. Please give — and give generously.

If you run a blog, please join the effort and do whatever you can to help spread the word.

Hurricane Katrina Aftermath

August 30th, 2005

Havoc has wreaked upon the Gulf Coast. In New Orleans, conditions have gone from worse to catastrophic — enough to warrant total evacuation of the city. Towns in Mississippi and Alabama are devastated from Katrina’s wrath. Death and destruction are rampant.

The Violence Worker sums up the loss of words that I have to say. Brendan Loy is blogging as conditions allow. Paul @ Wizbang is among those sheltered inside the Superdome. Michele is on the lookout for good news in the midst of it all.

In the meantime, it’s time to help our fellow Americans. I plan to do my part as payday comes tomorrow. Won’t you join me in doing the same? Visit Val, Lee Ann, and California Yankee for a list of relief agencies who are stepping up to the rescue.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Kevin @ Wizbang is collecting donations to help Paul. Please give whatever you can to help.

In Memoriam

August 8th, 2005

John H. Johnson, groundbreaking publisher and entrepreneur, died today at 87. As an avid reader of Ebony, Jet, and numerous books published by Johnson Publishing Co., I will miss him. If ever there was a testament of what hard work, determination, and pursuit of excellence can do, it was definitely Johnson’s career and legacy.

ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings also passed away late Sunday night just months after announcing to the world that he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 67.

Trade, Not Aid

July 5th, 2005

Isn’t it ironic that while the G8 summit and the Live 8 concerts are addressing African poverty, Tony Blair, Bob Geldof, et. al. didn’t bother to consult any Africans for input?

Well, Africans are speaking out, and what they’re saying has more potential for hope than any rock star-induced guilt trip or blind debt cancellation could provide.

“The [image] of a helpless, passive Africa waiting helplessly for handouts from the West is just a myth. Africa’s story is one of self-help, self-reliance, self-determination and Africans supporting other Africans.” […]

“It’s time to start talking about the solutions and the solutions can be found in Africa.” […]

“What we are saying is trade not aid; poverty reduction cannot be sustained purely by handouts.” […]

“The very concept of poverty reduction should be changed into wealth creation.” […]

“Programmes aimed at tackling Africa’s problems must be both African-led and African-driven, if they are to be successful.” […]

“Organisations cannot just come along and put a project in place and just expect people to accept it. Cancelling debt without questioning the type of practices that led to the creation of debt in Africa is not sustainable.” […]

“We believe that given a fair chance, fair trade and good governance, Africans can transform their economic and social prospects.” […]

“Such benevolent liberal interests do not directly influence the structural and functional mechanisms that restrict and undermine Africa’s development.” […]

“It is the ability of the African people to mobilize political power on their own political principles, in order to control the economic system to their advantage, so crucial to resolving Africa’s difficulties.”

Hiatus Interrupted

June 10th, 2005

Hi folks! Due to work demands, something had to give — namely this weblog.

Much to the chagrin of Chairman YEEARGH!!!! , this White Christian Republican has been too busy earning an honest living these days. But hey, at the rate he’s going, he’ll hand a very cheerful GOP the ‘06 and ‘08 elections on a silver platter.

Howard “I Have A Scream” Dean might have to watch his back, though. Rosie O’Donnell just might challenge him for the DNC chairmanship if he isn’t careful…

In Nevada news, school employees didn’t get the big, fat cost-of-living raise to catch up with the California-esque inflation rates here, but the good news is that I did register two vehicles in 2004 — and saved more money on registration fees that would put some CGI-animated geckos to shame. So give me back my money already — and make it snappy!

More to come this weekend (and damn it, I mean it!)…

Under Construction

April 10th, 2005

I’m applying a new WP template to the blog. More bells and whistles (and yes, posts) to come.
