On The Road

June 12th, 2004

I’ll be offline for the rest of the weekend as I head to Southern California for my aunt’s graduation (M.A. degree in Rehabilitation Counseling). Posting will resume Monday.

Light Posting Abounds

June 7th, 2004

Posting will be light due to my summer work schedule, plus I’ve been busy with home matters.

To those who’ve been waiting to see my response to the recent New York Times articles on Las Vegas, rest assured that I’m working on it as time allows, and it will be posted as soon as it’s ready.

Home Improvements

May 30th, 2004

The broadband connection was down for most of the weekend, which explains the light posting. But a cable modem replacement and a technical visit from Cox Communications later (the dowlink from the cable tap to the house had melted over time), things are once again smooth sailing.

Also, I had to prep the place for the hot summer months. I sprayed the perimeter of the residence for bugs, cleaned the patio, performed some minor plumbing fixes, and fixed the entry door. Although I still have to finish cleaning up before guests descend upon the house tomorrow afternoon, the place looks a whole lot better.

Today, I went and invested in an electric BBQ grill (due to HOA rules, I can’t have gas or charcoal grills on my patio, and grilling outside in the common area is definitely out of the question), and I’ll be assembling it and breaking it in tomorrow. I was wondering if anybody might have had any positive experiences with electric grilling and can share some pointers. Otherwise, I’ll just see how the diners react tomorrow. :-D

Down, But Not Out

May 28th, 2004

The cable modem went south yesterday, and has miraculously decided to get its act together (and saving me money in the process).

It’s going to be a light posting weekend, due to much-needed chores and R&R. But I’ll be around.

Moved.

May 8th, 2004

There’s still a lot of items left to unpack and settle into the new digs, but much of the hard work is done for now.

Be sure to update your blog links to reflect http://www.dcthornton.com/. The redirect to the old URL is now switched off.

Finally, please let me know what you think of the design, features, etc. WordPress is still a new learning experience for me, even after running a test blog in the background for a while.

Off to bed I go.

Construction Ahead

May 7th, 2004

I’ve decided to migrate the weblog to WordPress. While I’m at it, I’ll be tweaking the blog design a bit. Everything on the MT weblog should be functional for now. If anything changes, announcements will be made.

Thank you for your understanding.

Pardon The Interruption

May 5th, 2004

My computer had an unexpected run-in with the W32. Sasser.B.Worm over the past weekend. Suffice it to say, I spent more time under the hood than behind the wheel.

Thanks to several updates and a reinforced firewall, Ye Olde Athlon XP 2300 is up and running again — and the weblog will be up and running again.

After work today Tomorrow, of course.

Update: I’m feeling a tad icky tonight and hoping that a recent allergy attack doesn turn into a full-blown cold. More to come in the morning.

Blogads Question

April 20th, 2004

Is anyone else besides me encountering an error page when trying to approve a new ad?

Back to HTML

February 27th, 2004

At the suggestion of Prometheus 6, I decided to rebuild the weblog using HTML instead of PHP, which had been reliable for generating a multitude of entries for me until recently. If you’re looking for any previous entries individually or should you come across a 404 page, just replace “.php” with “.html”, and you’ll find what you’re looking for.

The HTML rebuild is an interim fix, as I prefer the efficiency of PHP. However, I will remain patient and wait for the release of Movable Type 3.0 before considering another publishing system (I will admit that I am quite impressed with the new ExpressionEngine, though).

We now return to your regularly scheduled weblog reading.

Please Stand By

February 26th, 2004

I’ve been having problems with my archive and indvidual entry pages not showing up on the blog. Despite consultations with my ISP, the Movable Type support forums, and word of mouth, I’m still at a loss as how to correct the problem.

If anyone out there knows how to fix the problem once and for all, I’m all ears. Otherwise, I may be migrating the blog to either pMachine or WordPress this weekend.

(The Return Of) Open Thread Friday

February 6th, 2004

I apologize for the lack of posting, folks. To put it short, I work for a living, and having a fluctuating work schedule doesn’t always leave me with time to blog, and blogging from work is definitely out of the question.

With that being said, I’m willing to entertain two options that other bloggers are already using to keep the content (as well as the rise up the TTLB ecosystem) rolling: select guest bloggers and more open thread postings.

I haven’t worked up the nerve yet for an open-mic session for guest postings, but I will keep an open mind about it.

So, what say you? Do you think you have what it takes to be a guest blogger on dct.b? Do you appreciate the finer things in life such as individual liberty; an unrehearsed perspective on local, national, and world events; and an affinity for popular culture? Would you be willing to pinch hit for Yours Truly every now and then?

Although I can’t promise a million-dollar prize, a lucrative recording contract, or the love of your dreams, I can give you a forum to say what’s on your mind and share a lot of link traffic with you.

I already have several people in mind to invite to join dct.b as guest bloggers; but I want to hear from you. Please leave comments in this post or e-mail me.

I Upgraded To MovableType 2.666?!?

January 27th, 2004

Actually, I upgraded to MT 2.661, and noticed that the new redirecting feature isn’t to my liking, as I like to do mouseovers on commenter links.

Fortunately, David Raynes comes to the rescue with a nifty plugin to disable the redirect feature.

(* = Just a little humor there, folks. I love MT, and I look forward to using the publishing system for a long time.)

Temporarily Offline

January 3rd, 2004

Ye Olde Computer simply refused to cooperate. Please excuse me while I beat it into submisssion make some minor repairs…

Broadband Outage

September 3rd, 2003

It appears that I’m at the mercy of Cox Communications, as my broadband connection had been cut due to a regional outage. More to come as soon as the outage is fixed.

Downtime Ahead

July 31st, 2003

I’ve decided to move the weblog from its own subdomain to www.dcthornton.com over the weekend. Posting will be light.

When the move is completed, I’ll update it here, along with the usual redirectors.

Update: Rather than induce further headaches (as I couldn’t get the MT directories and files moved to the root successfully), I utilized my ISP’s Redirect URL option. Now, http://www.dcthornton.com/ will also get you here for the time being.

One blog. Two URLs. Tell a friend.
