Score One For Terrorists

May 8th, 2006

Mark Steyn on the life sentencing for Zacarias Moussaoui — who boastfully stated, “America, you lose”:

[...] America “lost” for a more basic reason: turning a war into a court case and upgrading the enemy to a defendant ensures you pretty much lose however it turns out. And the notion, peddled by some sappy member of the ghastly 9/11 Commission on one of the cable yakfests last week, that jihadists around the world are marveling at the fairness of the U.S. justice system, is preposterous. The leisurely legal process Moussaoui enjoyed lasted longer than America’s participation in the Second World War. Around the world, everybody’s enjoying a grand old laugh at the U.S. justice system.

I would say this is a tough one, D.C. I agree that U.S. (an many other) Western justice systems became a laughing stock of Jihadis.

However, we know that Mark Steyn tends to oversimplify from time to time. I dare say that he does not offer an alternative, unless one considers a quick bullet to the suspect’s brain to be a solution.

That the above mentioned justice system needs a serious overhaul could hardly be argued, but still it could not be bypassed. Unless we all agree to become a mirror image of the Jihadis.
