John Uzo Ogbu, R.I.P.

August 27th, 2003

John Ogbu was an anthropology professor at UC Berkeley whose concentration was on minority education, culture, and identity.

Though he will be missed, the fruits of his research will live on.

    Wow, I just finished his fascinating book a couple of weeks ago. What a shame…he’s gone and Chomsky lives on…life isn’t fair.

    I was doing a google search on Dr. Ogbu on this very day when I saw the SF Chronicle obituary. Really sad. I haven’t read his book yet, but I will buy it right now.

    John Uzo Ogbu: A fellow Nigerian in the diaspora, you have left a legacy for prosterity of scholars around the world to cherish and embrace. You gave us scholarship with courage, knowledge without boundaries, disdains for mediocrity, mentorship with accountability, and challenge to our reasons. Above all, John, you left our curious minds in the state of asking questions. For these, we say thank you. Neighbors don’t say good night. So long, great scholar! You will be missed indeed, John. O dabo!

    I was recently intoduced to Prof. Ogbu’s work while pursuing my Master’s degree in Education at Cleveland State University. His book on “Black American Students in an Affluent Suburb” blew me away and was the center of many classroom discussions on school performance of minority children. He will be truly missed. Thank God he left us a thought provoking body of work that will last many lifetimes.

    Well it is just one of those things of life. Dead is a natural thing that await all every living soul on earth. Dead my good friend said is a good thing that will come when it’s time for it to come.
    Prof. died when we at home needed him most.
