Food For Thought

July 2nd, 2003

“Every man … should periodically be compelled to listen to opinions which are infuriating to him. To hear nothing but what is pleasing to one is to make a pillow of the mind.”
– St. John Ervine

Believe it or not, readers, I strive to adhere to the above every day.

So much for that “echo-chamber of thought” nonsense…

That “compelled” bit concerns me. A lot of people were “compelled” in the communist re-education camps.

Granted, “compelled” isn’t the best word I’d use either, but I didn’t write it; I only cited it, in the considerate sense that it does one no harm to allow opposing points of view to be heard — even if we may disagree with them.

At least you and I do agree that “compelled” in the forceful sense is wrong, and that communism is evil.
